Yami Gautam emphasizes that content-driven narratives on OTT
platforms are contributing to bridging the gendered pay gap. Surpassing Rs 100
crore in earnings at the box office, Yami Gautam's film OMG 2 reaffirms her
confidence in selecting meaningful scripts. Reflecting on her journey since her
Bollywood debut in 2012 with "Vicky Donor," she observes the
transformative shifts within the industry. Addressing the question of the
persisting pay gap, Gautam acknowledges that her co-star Kumar's higher
remuneration is justifiable due to his extensive experience. However, she
underscores that the gender pay gap is progressively narrowing among
contemporaries. Within the same experience bracket, actors are now commanding
comparable fees irrespective of their gender.
Gautam credits the significant role of conversations
surrounding pay disparity and highlights the impact of the evolving landscape
of OTT platforms. She notes that a more balanced approach to writing has emerged,
resulting in both male and female roles being integral to the storyline. With
the emergence of modern narratives, actresses recognize their capacity to draw
audiences to theaters. Gautam observes this positive trend among her fellow
actors. Although complete parity hasn't been achieved yet, she anticipates that
the gender pay gap will soon become a thing of the past.
In recent years, Gautam has gravitated towards projects
centered around compelling stories, such as "Bala" (2019), "A
Thursday" (2022), and "Lost." She conveys her desire to
collaborate with male superstars as well. While she increasingly receives
scripts where she leads the project, she hopes that male actors remain open to
working alongside her. Reflecting on iconic films like "Chaalbaaz" (1989)
and "Seeta Aur Geeta" (1972), Gautam highlights that these classics
featured meatier roles for female stars, and male actors like Dharmendra,
Sanjeev Kumar, Sunny Deol, and Rajinikanth embraced those projects. She raises
the question of whether present-day actors would make similar choices and
expresses contentment that these discussions are now taking place.
