India will make it to the Second
World Test Championship (WTC) for the second time in as many seasons when they
take on Australia in the premier tournament, which will be played at the London
Oval from June 7 to 11. India defeated Australia 2-1 in the Border-Gavaskar
Trophy after the fourth and final Test ended in a stalemate on Monday. While
India may have secured a fourth straight Test series win in Australia, there
are several issues that need to be addressed by the team's management ahead of
the WTC tournament.
India regretted the absence of
wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant, who had a tragic car accident last year that ruled
him out of almost all cricket events until 2023.
In Pant's absence, KS Bharat
kept one sleeve, but his performance was unsatisfactory.
Great batsman Sunil Gavaskar
believes that the management should consider playing KL Rahul as a wicketkeeper
in the WTC Finals. To support his claim, Gavaskar pointed to Rahul's
performances during the England tour in 2021.
"You can see KL Rahul as a
wicketkeeper. If he bats at No.5 or 6 in at the Oval (in the WTC final) then
our batting will be stronger. Because he batted really well in England last
year. He scored a century at the Lord's. Keep KL Rahul in mind when you pick
your XI for the WTC final,” Gavaskar said during an interview.
Rahul, who was dropped from the
squad after the first two Tests against Australia, was also relieved of his
vice-captain's role, during his peak with the bat.
