The much-anticipated Women's Premier League kicked off on
March 4 when Mumbai Indians beat Gujarat Giants at the DY Patil Stadium. Mumbai
won this match comfortably.
In the opening week of the tournament, seven matches have
been played so far. The opening season will feature a total of 22 games with
each team playing twice.
Teams in the Women's Premier League:
· Delhi Capitals
· Gujarat Giants
· Mumbai Indians
· Royal Challengers Bangalore
· UP Warriorz
Here we will rank each team based on opening
week performance:
Mumbai Indians (10/10)
There is no doubt that Mumbai Indians were the best team in
the opening week of this tournament. The team led by Harmanpreet Kaur won all
three matches and secured a place in the standings. Mumbai Indians beat Gujarat
Giants in the first round by 143 runs and have been dominant ever since. It's
only the opening week, but because of this small competition, they are
favorites to win the season opener.
Delhi Capitals (8/10)
Delhi Capitals were another team that won the opening week
of the tournament, winning two of their first three matches and their only
defeat was in Mumbai.
The Meg Lanning-led team scored more than 200 runs in two
matches and looked impressive with the bat, but seemed to rely on a few players
when it came to bowling.
UP Warriorz (6.5/10)
Up Warriorz had a great start to the tournament beating the
Giants in the recent opener. Lucknow team has won one of the two matches so far
and their performance in these two matches is good.
With Alyssa Healy the team's only star still on the loose,
it looks like they're leaning on all the runners. One place where the team lags
is the inability of hitters and national experience.
Gujarat Warriors (4/10)
The Gujarat Giants have had a poor campaign so far, winning
just one out of three matches. Ahemdabad division is currently ranked second
and last in the table
Captain-elect Beth Mooney was ruled out of the tournament
and Sneh Rana will lead the team in her absence. On paper, this side looks like
it can recreate the same magic as Gujarat Titans.
Royal Challengers Bangalore (2/10)
Royal Challengers Bangalore are the only team yet to open
their account in the main table, losing three matches in a row.
Bangalore have the star duo of Smriti Mandhana and Ellyse
Perry but both players have proved their worth. RCB will need to win every
match from here to keep their hopes alive in the tournament.
