The 2023 FIH Men's World Cup
kicks off on Friday with a match between Argentina and South Africa at the
Kalnga Stadium in Bhubaneswar. The curtain raiser will begin at 1:00 p.m. IST.
Meanwhile, hosts India will play their first match on the same day against
Spain at 7:00 PM IST. The match will be played at the Birsa Munda Hockey
Stadium, Rourkela - another venue for the showpiece. A total of 16 teams are
participating in the World Cup of Hockey. They are divided into four groups -
Pool A, Pool B, Pool C and Pool D - each with four teams. India is in Pool D
alongside England, Spain and Wales. The final match of the tournament will take
place on January 29.
Note that India is hosting the
tournament for the second consecutive edition. It hosted the World Cup in 2018
which was held in Bhubaneswar. The edition saw Belgium defeat the Netherlands
in the final while Australia won the bronze.
What is the process?
Each team will play three games
in its pool and the best teams will go directly to the quarterfinals.
Meanwhile, the second and third teams from the four pools will compete in the
playoffs while the other four teams will enter the quarterfinals.
