Bangladesh's
cricket team has postponed a one-day international against India next month
from Dhaka after the country's opposition announced plans for protests that
could disrupt the capital on the same day. India arrive in Bangladesh next week
for their first tour since 2015, starting with the one-day international series
starting on December 4, with the first three matches to be played in Dhaka.
The third match of
the series, on December 10, has now been moved to the coastal city of
Chittagong, meaning it will avoid the rally of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party
(BNP) which is expected to draw hundreds of thousands of people. in the streets
of Dhaka.
The BNP has held
several large protests across the country since last month to demand the
resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's government.
"Chittagong
was the first to introduce Tests. We think there should be ODIs at this
venue," Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) chief Jalal Yunus told News Channel
on Wednesday.
Jalal declined to
say whether the protest was the reason for the change in schedule, but the New
Age newspaper said the board had made a decision to avoid the rally, citing an
unnamed BCB official.
Bangladesh will
also host India for two Tests in Chittagong from December 14-18 and Dhaka from
December 22-26.
