The Electoral Commission (EC) will announce today the
election schedule of the next President of India, according to an official
statement.
President Ram Nath Kovind's term expires on July 25, and
another president must be elected under Article 62 of the constitution.
The President of India is elected by an Electoral College
consisting of 776 members of parliament and 4,120 legislators. The total
strength of the constituency was 10,989,903 votes.
The NDA had 48.9 percent of the vote of all deputies.
Sources say the government wants a consensus among its
allies and the support of the parties to be in a "comfortable and
authoritative position" when deciding on the next president. The BJP
approached, among others, Biju Janata Dal and the YSR Congress Party - to
support their candidate.
The opposition has not yet announced a joint presidential
candidate, and Telangan K Chandrasekhara Rao's chief minister as KCR and
Maharashtra leader Sharad Pawar led the consensus-building meetings.
The last presidential vote took place in 2017, where Ram
Nath Kovind won 65.35 percent to become the 14th President of India.
