Shortly before a British-era bridge collapsed in Morbi,
Gujarat on Sunday night, people were knowing it. At least 130 people died after
the bridge collapsed into the river. CCTV footage shows a man swinging wildly,
holding ropes on both sides, as the bridge collapsed, at around 6.30pm.
The footage shows people on the water, with some taking
pictures on their mobile phones and others trying to push the bridge, the
footage shows. In a few seconds, the cables fall and the bridge collapses,
plunging people into the Macchu River. The walkway and fence collapsed, leaving
one side hanging in the air.
People fell on each other, said witnesses.
Other videos later showed people clinging to small bridges
as some swam to safety. About 500 people were on the bridge, although it only
took 125.
Jayrajsinh Jadeja, an adviser to the ruling BJP in Morbi, said on Sunday that 400 to 500 tickets had been issued, leading to the collapse of the assembly. The 150-year-old bridge was opened to the public on the 26th of October, after seven months of construction and maintenance.
An agreement
between the Morbi local government and Ajanta Manufacturers, a private company
awarded the contract for the repair of the bridge, reveals that the bridge was
opened ahead of schedule. The contract calls for the bridge to be closed for
repairs for eight to 12 months before reopening.
Sandeepsinh Zala, the mayor of Morbi, said that the company Oreva did not inform the authorities about the opening of the bridge and did not receive a health certificate to do so.
