India's Covid-19 number rose to 4,333 19,396 on Tuesday with 9,923 new cases, while the number of active cases rose to 79,313, according to the Ministry of Health. The number of victims increased to 5 24 890 with 17 new deaths, the data were updated at 20:00. Among the 17 new dead are six from Delhi, five from Kerala, two from Maharashtra and one each from Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh.

Of the total 5,248,890 deaths reported in the country, 1,479,888 are from Maharashtra, 69,889 from Kerala, 40,113 from Karnataka, 38,026 from Tamil Nadu, 26,238 from Delhi, 23,527 from from Uttar Pradesh and 21,209 from West Bengal.

The health ministry stressed that more than 70 per cent of the deaths occurred due to comorbidities. "Our numbers are in line with the Indian Medical Research Council," the ministry said on its website, adding that the state-wise distribution of figures is subject to further verification and reconciliation.

Active cases make up 0.18 percent of the total infection. The nationwide recovery rate of COVID-19 was recorded at 98.61 percent, the ministry said.

Within 24 hours, an additional 2,613 cases were included in the active number of COVID-19 cases. The daily positive rate was recorded at 2.55 percent and the weekly positive rate at 2.67 percent, the ministry said.

 The number of people recovering from the disease rose to 4,27,15,193 while the mortality rate was 1.21 percent. According to the ministry, 196.32 million faxes of COVID-19 have been administered in the country to date as part of a national vaccination campaign.

India's COVID-19 tally had crossed the 20-lakh mark on August 7, 2020, 30 lakh on August 23, 40 lakh on September 5 and 50 lakh on September 16. It went past 60 lakh on September 28, 70 lakh on October 11, crossed 80 lakh on October 29, 90 lakh on November 20 and surpassed the 1-crore mark on December 19.

India crossed the grim milestone of 2 crore on May 4, 3 crore on June 23 and 4 crore on January 25 this year.
