The first case of XE variant coronavirus disease (Covid-19)
in India was reported from Mumbai on Wednesday. A cross between two Omicron
strains BA.1 and BA.2 was found in a 50-year-old woman who arrived in the city
from South Africa in February, a Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said
in a statement. The asymptomatic patient had no comorbidities and was
quarantined after being diagnosed almost a month later in March, BMC said.

However, official sources told ANI that current evidence did
not suggest that it was a "XE" variant of Covid-19. "The FastQ

INSACOG genomic experts, who stated that the genomic constitution of this
variant had nothing to do with the genomic picture of the 'XE' variant,"
the source said.

Variant XE also occurs in Thailand and New Zealand. The WHO
says more data is needed than more can be said about the mutation.
It states: “The first calculations show a 10% increase in
community growth compared to BA.2.
There is no evidence XE is any more serious in disease
severity, with all Omicron variants so far shown to be less severe.
There is no evidence that XE is worse in terms of disease
severity, with all Omicron variants currently proving to be less severe.
