Hundreds
of farmers from various states today protested against unemployment at Jantar
Mantar in Delhi amid tight security measures taken by the police to prevent any
untoward incident. The police also arrested some farmers.
Here
are 10 key events of the Farmers Protest in Delhi
1. A
'Mahapanchayat' has been called by some farmers' organisations, including the
Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU), due to rising unemployment in the country. Some
farmers were seen ignoring the barricades erected by the police and promoting
slogans at Jantar Mantar.
2.
Additional forces were deployed at border entry points including Singhu, Tikri
and Ghazipur. Some farmers were detained and taken to Ghazipur border in buses,
news agency ANI reported.
3.
Huge deployment is also seen along railway lines, bus stations and metro
stations. Several parts of the national capital witnessed traffic jams as
police checked vehicles entering Delhi.
4.
These farmers' organizations demand proper implementation of minimum support
price (MSP) for crops. They also demanded withdrawal of cases registered
against farmers during their year-long protest against farm laws.
5.
Last week, the Samyukt Kisan Morcha had organised a demonstration in Uttar
Pradesh's Lakhimpur Kheri, "seeking justice" in the 2021 violence
case. Eight people, including four farmers, were allegedly run over by Union
Minister Ajay Mishra's son Ashish in Lakhimpur Kheri in October last year.
6. On
Sunday, farmer leader Rakesh Tikait was detained by the police at the Ghazipur
border as he tried to enter the national capital to take part in the
'mahapanchayat'.
7.
"This fight will continue till the last breath. He will not stop, he will
not tire, he will not bend," Rakesh Tikait later tweeted in Hindi after he
was released and sent back. He claimed that the Delhi Police was working on the
behest of the Centre.
8.
The farmer leader said he would meet SKM representatives in Delhi on September
6 to "strategize their future course of action".
9.
Earlier, thousands of farmers from Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan
had camped at border points around Delhi, demanding the cancellation of
centre's three farm laws for almost a year.
10.
The contentious farm laws were withdrawn by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in
November 2021, saying the government could not convince protesting farmers
about the benefits of reforms.
