Home Minister Amit Shah invited historians to rewrite the
history of the Indian region and assured them that the government would support
their efforts.
“I am a student of history and I often hear that our history
is misrepresented and distorted. That may be good, but now we have to fix
that," Shah said at a reception by the Assam government in Delhi.
"I ask you - who is preventing us from presenting the
history well and gloriously," Mr Shah said on the second day of the
three-day celebration of the 400th anniversary of the birth of Ahom General
Lachit Barphukan of the 17th century. November 24 is observed as Lachit Diwas
in his memory.
"I am asking all university students and professors
sitting here to stop this story and bad history and try to analyze the 30
studies that ruled the country for 150 years and the 300 famous people who
fought for freedom," he said. Once properly documented, the idea of spreading
fake news will disappear, he added.
The minister also assured the historians and students at
Vigyan Bhavan that the Center would support their research. "Go ahead,
research and rewrite history. This is how we can inspire the next
generation," he added. He also said that now is the time to revisit
history for the greater benefit of the people. Acknowledging Lachit's role in
stopping the Mughal expansion, Mr Shah said he defeated them despite his health
in the Battle of Sariaghat. He also opened a newspaper in Lachit during this
time.
Shah pointed out that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has
bridged the gap between the southeast and the rest of India. He said that peace
has been achieved in the northeast due to the efforts of the government
Shah also asked the Chief Minister of Assam Himanta Biswa
Sarma to get the documents in Lachit Barphukan translated into at least 10
languages. People and communities should know the value of Lachit, he said.
